We have been working hard in room 3 during our classroom transitions! As a a class we have been earning points to work towards extra recess or a special activity determined by the class. We worked so hard this week that we earned those 10 points quickly. The class brainstormed ideas for a special activity and (after a classroom vote) the verdict was Drop Everything And Create (or DEC)! I was super impressed by all of our students' creativity. At the end of the day we were constructing, drawing, building, painting, and beading. We had one student create a plane out of recyclables, another create a backpack, and countless more creations! It was so much fun and I am sure there will be another day like this in our near future!

This week we continued to build on our social thinking skills. We read the book "Following The Group Plan" and discussed the importance of knowing what the "group plan" is. The story focuses on a group of friends who are trying to work together to make an apple pie. During the process of gathering and combining the ingredients, each character becomes distracted, and derails from the group plan. This effects the whole group because they all want to make, and eat, the apple pie! Eventually everyone stays on track, and they are able to accomplish their goal. We connected this story to our schema about whole body listening, and discussed how listening with our whole body can help us become better at following the group plan. We had an exciting event on the playground with the birth of baby turtles! We also had a surprise visit from our Superintendent, Dr. Unobskey, who joined us as we recapped the meaning of estimation and worked in our math stations. This week we were busy bees! Some highlights from the week were: challenging ourselves with alphabetical order, starting to write in our journals, exploring our Fundation kits, practicing t/b/f (sound and letter formation), and revisiting many mathematical skills from kindergarten. We also had a visit from our Guidance Counselor Laurel Pirelli. She read us Whole Body Listening Larry at School. The book discusses how we listen with our eyes, ears, body, hands, mind, and heart. A great question to ask your child would be, "What does it mean to listen with your heart?" Lastly, the week wouldn't be complete with our Morning Mission! On Friday the students worked together to create towers. We then named some famous towers around the world and saw some pictures of what they look like! They especially liked the Leaning Tower of Pisa! We had a busy and fun week in first grade. We did a lot of getting to know our classroom, getting to know to each other, and creating our "Classroom Pact." All students brainstormed and contributed important thoughts/ideas about how we can make room 3 a fun and safe classroom environment. On Friday, students even signed our classroom pact poster with their handprint! We will have the final product on display for curriculum night for you all to enjoy! Below are some photos from our week that include: practicing reading stamina, exploring math manipulatives, and trying our "Morning Mission" that challenged students to work with a partner to construct a bridge. Enjoy! |
